Some clarification

To clear the air.   I'm not looking to get rid of the Ottawa Franchise.  I happen to really care about them, and hope they are back next season but lets be realistic here

108,000  to Ottawa City for Stadium Rental
75,000  (Ballpark number)  Visiting Team Transportation and Accomodations

50,000-75,000 roughly for team costs (based on figures the Guelph Mercury published last year on the ownership of the Royals)

Total Costs  (again a ballpark figure)  $258,000 roughly

  1. Hi: I shot the Fat Cats very first game, in Hamilton. Also their last IBL season game in Toronto. Photos up on my small photo site at http://ccvic.zenfolio.com

I sent the Fat cats management emails informing them of each set of pics posted and asking to let their players know about them - thought that the players might get a kick out of some of them. This third and last email got a reply from Fat Cats management demanding that I take down any and all Fat Cats photos.

The photos of their very first IBL are rare - as far as I know my site is the only place to find such photos.

I did not break any Canadian or Ontario Laws by shooting those photos and believe that I have the right to post my artistic and newsworthy photos on my site.

The last game was played at Christie Pit in Toronto, which is a public park. Last time I checked I have the full right to take photos in a Toronto Public Park. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms give me the right of expression via my photos and also the right to use media like the internet.

I used to provide pics for the Oshawa Dodgers web site - game day photos section. The Dodgers management were a class act. I was happy to email Kerri Drake any photos they wanted and they used their own site bandwidth to display the photos.

Anyhow, check the photos before they maybe disappear.

Has any else EVER come something like this?

  2. I'd say never take them down as they don't hold any trade marks to my knowledge it would be like them asking the Toronto Sun or the Star to remove pictures. If you need a place to post them stick them on facebook on the intercounty group page. You've done nothing wrong so keep your chin up.

  3. It does seem like a lofty feat, doesn't it?

I personally think that the Fat Cats may be done. The OSG has been interested in Pro Ball (CanAM or GBL) from the start. The IBL was just a filler, unfortunately.

I really hope the the Cats will come back, and since it's just rumors going around that they've been defunct, there is still hope. If a pro team comes into Ottawa Stadium as well as the Fat Cats under the same ownership group as FC, that should help cover costs.

Anyways, I've written about this on my Fat Cats blog a little more.

  4. The msg was from Duncan MacDonald. The following are the first two sentences (posted for reference as I am unable to try and paraphrase it):
"You do not possess the rights to broadcast images of our players or other Intellectual Property over the Internet or other medium. Please immediately remove any photos of our players from your website and cease from distributing photos to any third parties."

*** end of quoted two sentences ***

That reply I received for the following msg which I had sent (since it is mine I can reproduce the "ENTIRE" msg):
    "Hi:
We took photos of the Jul 18 game of the the Fat Cats vs the Maple Leafs at Christie Pits in Toronto. Have started to process and post to our web site at http://ccvic.zenfolio.com

If you get chance, drop in for a web visit. More photos will get posted daily.

Also please let the players know that Sunday's game photos are being posted. They might get a kick out of some of them. Some of your players were asking if I had gotten the shot of 2nd base Fat Cat jumping over a Maple Leafs players sliding into 2nd (close to the end of the game). I have processed and posted that whole sequence of shots for them.

    Thanks for your time.

*** end of quotes of my msg to the Fat Cats ***

It's funny that they waited till the season ended, to send me their demands. They knew I was taking photos in Hamilton (at the beginning of the season) and knew that I was going to post them on my site. How? Their Game Day manager, at the Hamilton game, tried to convince me to contact a reporter for the Ottawa Citizen and to sell my photos to the Ottawa Citizen. The guy at the Citizen was apparently writing an article about the Fat Cats first game but had no photos. To top it off Mr O'Neill, the IBL Commissioner, was standing right there listening to the whole thing.

After I started to post the first batch of the Hamilton photos I sent the Fat Cats management a similar email, to the one quoted above, inviting them to check the photos and inform the players about the pics. Got no reply, but started to get lots of visitors viewing the photos.

I drove to Hamilton and paid for my own gas. I paid my entrance fee to the game. I paid for my camera gear, flash memory, computers and software to process the photos. I paid for the Internet site and hence the bandwidth that was being used to view the photos. I gave up my time to try and capture a historic newsworthy IBL game.

I guess this is an example of the Thanks one can expect. Live and learn.

  5. Your Photos are great . DO NOT TAKE THEM DOWN. Ottawa should be thankful a fan took the effort to drive 5-6 hours to hamilton and toronto to watch them play.

  6. As per the CBC it looks like that stadium lease was only for one year.

    http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2010/03/24/ottawa-fat-cats-baseball.html

The league, an independent minor league with seven other teams across the province, announced March 10 that it had awarded its newest franchise to the Ottawa Stadium Group. The group signed a one-year lease with the city in February for the stadium that used to be home of the Can-Am League Ottawa Rapidz and the Triple-A Ottawa Lynx before that.

  7. Yeah, I checked out those photos as well, and quite frankly, they are awesome. Very nice pics :)

Yeah, the lease was for one year, but to my understanding, OSG took the one year deal to test the water. I believe that they had a positive experience this year, and whether it's Pro Ball, the Fat Cats, or both... we'll see baseball played at Ottawa Stadium next year.
